Preventive Care Q & A

What is preventive care?

Preventive care is a branch of dentistry that uses preemptive measures to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Many oral health problems like cavities and gum disease present few obvious symptoms early on.

Preventive care works to catch these and other issues before they result in tooth loss, gum recession, or bone decay. It also provides tips and insights you can use to improve your oral health as a whole.

What are the types of preventive care?

At VidaDental, Dr. Cuevas offers a full suite of preventive care services, including:

Oral exams

An oral exam is a comprehensive screening used to detect cavities and gum disease. During an exam, Dr. Cuevas uses a small handheld mirror to look for signs of tooth decay, gum inflammation, or oral abscesses. An oral exam can also catch orthodontic issues like misaligned teeth and crowding.

Professional teeth cleanings

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends everyone undergo a professional teeth cleaning every six months. During a teeth cleaning, a member of Dr. Cuevas’s team carefully removes the plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and from underneath your gum line.

Afterward, they polish your teeth with a gritty toothpaste, floss your teeth, and apply a fluoride treatment if necessary.

Oral X-rays

Oral X-rays use small amounts of radiation to take detailed images of your tooth roots and jawbones. These images make it possible for Dr. Cuevas to diagnose impacted teeth, cavities, bone recession, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. She also uses oral X-rays to guide dental implant placement.

Periodontal treatment

If you develop gingivitis or periodontitis, you might benefit from periodontal treatment. Dr. Cuevas offers several types of periodontal treatment, including scaling and root planing and antibiotic medications.

During scaling and root planing, Dr. Cuevas removes plaque and tartar from your teeth and beneath your gum line (scaling). Then she smooths out the surfaces of your teeth (root planing), allowing your gums to reattach.

If you have a serious case of gum disease, you might need antibiotics. These medications eradicate harmful bacteria, allowing your gums to heal and regenerate.

What types of preventive care can I do at home?

In between check-ups at VidaDental it’s important to practice good oral hygiene. To keep your teeth and gums in great shape, Dr. Cuevas recommends brushing and flossing daily, eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, and avoiding sugary or starchy snacks.
