Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small metal posts made of titanium that provide a firm foundation for oral prosthetics like crowns, bridges, and implant-supported dentures. Unlike other tooth restoration options, implants don’t rely on your healthy teeth for support. Instead, Dr. Cuevas places them into small incisions in your gum line during a quick outpatient procedure.

Following the procedure, your bone grows around each implant, fusing them to your jaw. This allows you to bite and chew confidently, without the slipping or sliding often associated with traditional false teeth.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Compared to dentures and other oral prosthetics, dental implants present an array of benefits, including:

  • Improved oral health
  • Easier eating
  • Durability
  • Convenience
  • Comfort
  • Improved speech

Dental implants can also boost your confidence and self-esteem. If you’re missing teeth, the skin around your mouth tends to fold and wrinkle. Dental implants restore structure to your mouth, making you appear more youthful.

Who qualifies for dental implants?

To qualify for dental implants you need healthy gums and plenty of jawbone. If Dr. Cuevas detects low bone volume or gum disease, she might recommend scaling and root planing or bone grafting before getting implants.

Additionally, let Dr. Cuevas know if you have a chronic condition like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease. These health problems won’t necessarily disqualify you from getting implants, but they may increase your risk of complications during surgery.

Does getting dental implants take several appointments?

Getting dental implants takes a series of three or more appointments spaced several weeks or months apart. This may seem like a significant commitment, but it’s important to remember that with proper care, dental implants can last for decades.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Cuevas conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks about your goals for treatment. If you have healthy gums and plenty of bone, she administers a local anesthetic to numb your mouth and carefully places a series of implants –– one for each missing tooth –– in small holes in your gums.

Following the procedure, you return home for several months. During this time, your bone grows around each implant, holding them in place. Once your mouth heals, you return to VidaDental.

At your second appointment, Dr. Cuevas takes impressions of your teeth and gums and sends the impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your crowns, dental bridges, or implant-supported dentures.

Several weeks later, you return for your third and final appointment. Dr. Cuevas bonds your new prosthetics to your implants, restoring your smile, as well as your chewing and biting abilities.
