How a Dentist Can Use Dermal Fillers

Many people think about cosmetic surgeons when dermal fillers are brought up, but dentists also use these materials to address various dental issues. These fillers can be used to improve the way the structures around your mouth, like your chin, jaw, and lips, look. They help to get rid of signs of aging that build up around the mouth like fine lines.

How dentists use dermal fillers

The three essential things a person’s skin needs to remain wrinkle-free, supple, and firm are hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin. Collagen is one of the major building blocks that maintain the structure of a person’s skin. It works alongside elastin to give skin the elastic properties that allow it to return to its original position when stretched. Hyaluronic acid helps to trap water under the skin, adding volume and keeping it hydrated. Unfortunately, the body creates less collagen and elastin as a person grows older, leading to signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines, and the loss of elasticity.

Muscles also need collagen to maintain them, and they tend to lose definition and volume as collagen production decreases. This leads to many of the facial structure changes associated with aging. A dermal filler contains hyaluronic acid, and it can be used to restore definition and volume to a patient’s face.

Some of the popular ways dermal fillers are used in dentistry include:

  • To close gaps between teeth: At times, the gum tissue between two teeth might be too small, leaving a gap between them that ruins the aesthetics of the person’s smile. Dermal fillers can be used to increase the volume up such tissues, closing up any gaps between teeth
  • Eliminate marionette lines: These lines often start from the nose to the mouth, then extend from the sides of the mouth. These wrinkles form when the muscles and skin around the mouth, nose, and cheeks begin to lose their structure. A dermal filler can be used to restore definition and volume to these areas, making the patient appear more youthful
  • Improve the shape of the jaw and chin: Many people are not fortunate enough to be born with the perfect jawline or chin. Dermal fillers can be used to increase the definition and size of a patient’s chin, creating a more aesthetically pleasing one
  • Increase the fullness of lips: This is one of the more popular uses of dermal fillers. It can be used to increase the volume and elasticity of a person's lips, and that often gets wrinkles around the mouth as well

Give dermal fillers a try

Dermal fillers give you a safe way to fight the effects of aging and improve the appearance of your facial structures. It uses hyaluronic acid – a substance naturally found in the body – to increase the fullness and definition of the muscles on your face.
