3 Tips to Prepare for Juvéderm Treatment from a Dentist
Juvéderm® is a popular type of dermal filler that is used for the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles that are typically the result of aging. Treatment involves the use of a gel-like product that contains hyaluronic acid (combined with water). The solution is injected into your facial skin during a minimally invasive procedure.
How you can prepare for your Juvéderm® treatment
There are certain things that patients can do before their scheduled Juvéderm treatment to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible with a reduced risk of complications or unexpected side effects. Three important tips to help you prepare for Juvéderm treatment include not using any medications that can cause blood thinning, avoiding the use of skin products, and discussing the expected results beforehand.
Do not use any medications that can thin your blood before treatment
One of the biggest risks of Juvéderm treatment is bruising. The risk of bruising is much higher among those who use medications that can cause blood to thin. Medications and supplements that your Juvéderm provider may ask you to quit using for a week are:
- Aspirin
- Motrin
- Aleve
- Vitamin E
- Ginkgo biloba
- Garlic
- Fish oil
- St. John’s wort
Of course, some patients may have medications they are not able to stop using for medical reasons, in which case it is important to notify the Juvéderm provider of those medications so they can tailor the treatment process accordingly.
Avoid the use of skin treatments that may cause skin irritation
Skin irritation can make the treatment process more challenging and potentially compromise the results. Subsequently, it is important to minimize the risk of skin irritation by stopping the use of any skin products that could cause skin irritation. This includes but is not limited to:
- Anti-aging creams
- Tretinoin
- Retinol
- Glycolic acid
- Hair removal creams
It is also important to avoid any waxing or bleaching before Juvéderm treatment as well. A common mistake made by many patients is trying too hard to prepare for Juvéderm by removing hair or treating skin they perceive to be too dry. The fact is that there are not many preparations needed, and limiting the use of products is actually the best way to prepare.
Discuss realistic expectations before the procedure
Most patients are satisfied with the final results of Juvéderm, but it is important to have realistic expectations about what Juvéderm can and cannot accomplish as it relates to your aesthetic treatment goals. Be sure to discuss what Juvederm can do for you with your provider to ensure that it is the most appropriate method of meeting your aesthetic goals.
